Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer of many important buildings in an austere modern style; he is known internationally for his industrial design, particularly for his three-legged stacking chair (1952) and his “egg” chair (1959), the back and seat of which were formed of cloth-covered plastic. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kay Fisker and Kaj Gottlob, and was influenced by the functionalist architecture of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. He worked as an architect for the city of Copenhagen and for private clients. He designed many public and private buildings, such as the Bellevue Theatre, the SAS Royal Hotel, the Aarhus City Hall, the St Catherine's College, and the Danmarks Nationalbank. He also created logos and ex libris for various institutions and individuals. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and a professor at the School of Architecture. He received several awards and medals for his work, such as the C.F. Hansen Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. He died in Copenhagen in 1971 and his work is included in the Danish Culture Canon. ¹²³
