About me / Bio:

Wojciech Has was a Polish film director, screenwriter and film producer who made 27 feature films, including The Saragossa Manuscript, Lalka, and Jak byc kochana. He also wrote 13 screenplays and won several awards. He was born in Kraków in 1925 and studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts and the Łódź Film School. He began his career by making documentary and educational films, and then moved on to feature films in 1957. He was known for his distinctive style of creating hermetic environments, surreal imagery, and dreamlike narratives. He was influenced by the Polish literary tradition, especially the works of Bruno Schulz and Jan Potocki. He was also interested in the history and culture of Poland, especially the period of the partitions and the interwar years. He was appointed as a professor in the directing department at the National Film School in Łódź in 1974. He died of a heart attack in 2000, shortly after completing his last film, The Tribulations of Balthazar Kober.
