Juan Garcia Ponce

Juan García Ponce was one of the most influential and prolific writers of Mexico in the second half of the 20th century. He was part of the Generación de la Ruptura, a group of writers and artists who broke away from the nationalist and social realist trends of the post-revolutionary era. He wrote novels, short stories, essays, plays, and criticism, exploring themes such as eroticism, identity, art, and modernity. He was also a prominent translator of authors such as Robert Musil, Thomas Mann, Jorge Luis Borges, Pierre Klossowski, and Georges Bataille. He received many awards and honors for his work, including the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, the Anagrama Essay Prize, the National Prize for Arts and Sciences, and the Juan Rulfo Prize. He suffered from multiple sclerosis since 1977, which gradually affected his mobility and speech, but did not stop him from writing until his death in 2003. He is widely regarded as one of the masters of Mexican literature and a key figure in the cultural life of his country.
