About me / Bio:
Günther Behnisch was a German architect who was born in Lockwitz, near Dresden, in 1922. He served as a submarine commander during the Second World War and became a prisoner of war in England. After the war, he studied architecture at the Technical University in Stuttgart and established his own practice in 1952. He became one of the most prominent architects representing deconstructivism, a style that challenged conventional forms and structures. He was best known for his design of the Olympic Park in Munich for the 1972 Summer Olympics, which featured a tensile roof structure developed with engineer Frei Otto. He also designed the new parliament building in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, which was completed in 1992. He was a professor of architecture at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt from 1967 to 1987 and received many awards and honors for his work. He died in Stuttgart in 2010 at the age of 88. His son Stefan Behnisch is also a renowned architect who runs his own firm. ¹²
