Agoston Pavel

Ágoston Pável, known in Slovenian as Avgust Pavel, was a Hungarian Slovene writer, poet, ethnologist, linguist, and historian. Born on August 28, 1886, in Cankova, he was the third child of Iván Pável, a tailor, and Erzsébet Obal. He excelled in his studies, graduating with excellence from a Hungarian-speaking high school and later studying Hungarian and Latin at Péter Pázmány University in Budapest. Pável was a prominent figure in the cultural exchange between Hungarians and Slovenes and translated significant Slovenian literary works into Hungarian. His contributions to linguistics and ethnology are well-recognized, particularly his research on Slavic-Hungarian speech forms and the phonology of Slovene. Pável passed away on January 2, 1946, in Szombathely, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly work and cultural bridging.
