Christian Norberg-Schulz

Christian Norberg-Schulz was a Norwegian architect, author, educator and architectural theorist. He was part of the Modernist Movement in architecture and associated with architectural phenomenology. He studied at the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, Harvard University and the Norwegian Institute in Rome. He taught at Yale University and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, where he also served as Dean. He edited the architectural journal Byggekunst and wrote several influential books on architectural history and theory, such as Intentions in Architecture, Genius Loci, and Principles of Modern Architecture. He was interested in the relationship between space, form, and human perception, and the role of place and context in architecture. He was influenced by the works of Giedion, Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Heidegger, Wölfflin, and others. He also practiced as an architect, designing several glass-and-steel houses in Oslo with Arne Korsmo. He received many awards and honors for his contributions to architecture, such as the Grand Prix of the UIA, the Gold Medal of the RIBA, and the Prince Eugen Medal. He died in Rome in 2000, after a long battle with cancer.
