Emil Baerentzen

Emil Bærentzen was a Danish portrait painter and lithographer, active during the Golden Age of Danish Painting. He founded Em. Bærentzen & Co., a lithographic company that produced many portraits of notable figures of his time. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and received the Academy's travel grant in 1866. He went to Paris and later to Italy, where he was influenced by the French Realist movement. He returned to Denmark in 1868 and married. He was named a Commander in the Order of the Dannebrog and later was awarded the Dannebrogordenens Hæderstegn. He served as the director of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for several terms. He died in Copenhagen in 1868 at the age of 68. Some of his notable works include A Pack of Horses Outside an Inn, The Conspirators Ride from Finderup After the Murder of Eric Klipping, and Danish Soldiers Return to Copenhagen in 1848.
