Alexei Savrasov

Alexei Savrasov was a Russian painter who specialized in depicting the life of ordinary Russians of the 17th century. He was influenced by Perov, Pryanishnikov, and Chistyakov. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and became a member of the Peredvizhniki group. He was one of the first artists to portray the railway workers and their harsh conditions. He also collaborated with Vasily Perov on several paintings. His most famous work, The Rooks Have Come Back, showed the transition of nature from winter to spring. He was a pioneer of the lyrical landscape style, also called the mood landscape. He became an alcoholic in the late 1870s and died in poverty in 1897.
