Mamdouh Salem

Mamdouh Salem was an Egyptian politician and military who served as the 39th Prime Minister of Egypt from April 16, 1975 to October 2, 1978. He graduated from the Police College and rose to the rank of general in the Alexandria police force. He served as a security aide and provincial governor under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. He joined President Anwar Sadat’s cabinet in 1971 as minister of the interior and deputy prime minister. He formed a new government as prime minister in 1975 and supported Sadat’s peace initiatives with Israel. He merged his Arab Socialist Party with Sadat’s National Democratic Party in 1978, but resigned his cabinet post later that year. He then served as a presidential adviser to Sadat and his successor, Hosni Mubarak. He died in London of an unknown illness in 1988.
