Mir Nooruddin Mengal

Mir Nooruddin Mengal was a Baloch nationalist leader and former senator of Pakistan. He was the nephew of the Baloch poet and politician Mir Gul Khan Nasir. He started his political career as a student activist and joined the Baloch Students Organization in 1970. He became its vice chairman in 1974 and remained active in the Baloch nationalist movement. He was arrested several times by the Pakistani authorities for his political activities and spent many years in jail. He was also a close associate of Sardar Ataullah Mengal and Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri, the prominent Baloch leaders. He contested the 1988 general elections and became a member of the Senate of Pakistan. He also served as the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources. He was a founding member of the Balochistan National Party and later joined the Pakistan National Party. He was a vocal critic of the military operations in Balochistan and advocated for the rights of the Baloch people. He was assassinated by unknown gunmen on 13 October 2010 in Kalat. He was widely mourned by the Baloch people and his funeral was attended by thousands of people. He is regarded as a martyr and a hero by the Baloch nationalists.
