Ali Merdan was a prominent Iraqi musician and singer of Kurdish descent who was born in Kirkuk in 1904. He is widely regarded as the man who revolutionized the maqam, a traditional genre of Arabic music. He launched the Kurdish Radio Station in Baghdad in 1939 and sang more than 1000 songs in his career. He was influenced by the classical and modern poets of Iran and Iraq, such as Hafez, Saadi, Rumi, Khayyam, Nima Yushij, Forough Farrokhzad, and Ahmad Shamlou. He was known for his mastery of Persian and Kurdish languages and cultures, his eloquence and wit, his love of poetry and music, and his devotion to Iran and Iraq. He died in Baghdad on 24 July 1981.
