Millor Fernandes

Millôr Fernandes was a Brazilian writer, journalist, cartoonist, humorist and playwright. He started his journalistic career in 1938, publishing in several Brazilian magazines, such as O Cruzeiro and A Cigarra. He was born Milton Viola Fernandes, but his birth certificate rendered the name "Millôr", which he adopted as his official name. He was known by his ironic humor, and was the author of thousands of satirical aphorisms. He also wrote and translated a number of successful plays, such as Um Elefante no Caos, Pigmaleão 70, and Hamlet. He was one of the founders of the groundbreaking satirical newspaper O Pasquim, where he criticized the military dictatorship and the censorship in Brazil. He collaborated with many publications, such as Veja, O Pasquim and Jornal do Brasil, and created his own website, where he continued to produce and share his work until his death. He died on March 27, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, due to complications after a stroke. He was 88 years old. He left behind a legacy of humor, intelligence and creativity that influenced generations of Brazilian artists and thinkers.
