Gesang Martohartono was an Indonesian composer and songwriter who specialized in children's songs. He started his career as a teacher in Riau and Jakarta before becoming a composer at the request of his students. He wrote more than 500 songs with simple lyrics and rhythms, such as "Cicak di Dinding" ("Lizard on the Wall"), "Pelangi" ("Rainbow"), and "Ambilkan Bulan" ("Take the Moon"). He also hosted two children's song shows on TVRI, the Indonesian state-run television, for nearly 20 years. He received numerous awards and recognition for his contribution to Indonesian music and education, including the 2003 AMI Lifetime Achievement Award. He died of starvation in 2010 at the age of 92. He is regarded as one of the pioneers and icons of Indonesian music.
