Bing Slamet

Bing Slamet was an Indonesian singer, comedian and actor who was one of the pioneers of the Angkatan '45 literary movement. He was born with the name Ahmad Syech Albar on 27 September 1927 in Cilegon, West Java (today in Banten province) to a Minangkabau family. His father was a journalist and his mother was a teacher. He started his career in theater in 1953 with the play Runtuhan. He made his film debut in 1954 with Sri Asih. He was nominated for four Citra Awards at the Indonesian Film Festival and won three of them, as best actor for his roles in Anakku Sajang (1960), Dibalik Tjahaja Gemerlapan (1967), and Kemelut Hidup (1979). He also produced one film, Honey Money and Djakarta Fair, under his own company PT Kartika Binaprama in 1970. He married R. Ratna Kamala Furi and had eight children, three of whom followed his footsteps as entertainers: Uci Bing Slamet, Adi Bing Slamet, and Iyut Bing Slamet. He died of a stroke in Jakarta on 17 December 1974 and was buried at TPU Karet Bivak. He was also the brother of actor Ismed M. Noor.
