Nihat Erim was a Turkish politician and jurist who served as the 13th Prime Minister of Turkey for almost 14 months after the 1971 Turkish military memorandum. He was also a professor of law at Ankara University and a legal advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Republican People's Party and held various ministerial positions before becoming the prime minister. He led a coalition government that implemented reforms in education, agriculture, and public administration while the country was under martial law. He resigned in 1972 after failing to secure a vote of confidence from the parliament. He continued his political career as a member of the Grand National Assembly until 1973. He was also a member of the European Commission on Human Rights from 1956 to 1962. He was assassinated by the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party,Front in Istanbul in 1980.
