Siva Brata Bhattacherjee

Siva Brata Bhattacherjee, also spelt as Sibabrata Bhattacherjee, was an Indian physicist and crystallographer who made important contributions to the field of X-ray crystallography and solid-state physics. He was a professor of physics at the University of Calcutta and a faculty member of the Department of Technology at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Siva Brata Bhattacherjee was born in 1921 in India. His date and place of birth are not known. He studied with the eminent physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, who is best known for his work on quantum statistics and the Bose-Einstein condensate. Siva Brata completed his doctoral thesis under Bose's supervision at the University College of Science, commonly known as Rajabazar Science College, in Calcutta. His thesis topic was on solid-state physics, a branch of physics that deals with the properties and behavior of solids. In 1945, he joined the Khaira Laboratory of Physics at the Science College and specialized in the field of X-ray crystallography, a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of crystals. He worked on various aspects of crystallography, such as diffraction, symmetry, space groups, lattice constants, and crystal defects. He also collaborated with other scientists in India and abroad, such as Henry Lipson and Lawrence Bragg. Siva Brata Bhattacherjee also served as a faculty member of the Department of Technology at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in England. He taught courses on crystallography, metallurgy, ceramics, and materials science. He also conducted research on topics such as phase transformations, dislocations, grain boundaries, and alloys. Siva Brata Bhattacherjee was married to Lilabati Bhattacharjee, who was the Director (Mineral Physics) of the Geological Survey of India.
