Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha

Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha was born in Gotha, Germany, on 30 November 1719. She was the daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. She married Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of George II of Great Britain, in 1736. She became Princess of Wales and had nine children with him. She never became queen consort, as Frederick died in 1751 before his father. She was the mother of George III, who succeeded his grandfather as king in 1760. She was also the grandmother of George IV and William IV. She was a patron of the arts and sciences, and supported the development of Kew Gardens. She also had a political influence, as she was the presumptive regent of Great Britain in case of a minority or incapacity of her son until he reached majority in 1756. She died of throat cancer on 8 February 1772 at Carlton House in London. She was buried at Westminster Abbey.
