Josef Mengele

Josef Mengele was a German doctor and SS officer who conducted horrific medical experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. He was nicknamed the "Angel of Death" for his role in selecting inmates for execution in the gas chambers and administering the gas. He was also interested in genetic research, especially on twins, and performed various procedures on them without regard for their health or safety. He fled to South America after the war and evaded capture by Nazi hunters until his death by drowning in 1979. He was buried under a false name and his remains were identified in 1985. He is considered one of the most notorious war criminals in history and a symbol of the atrocities of the Holocaust.
