About me / Bio:
Santiago Carrillo was born on January 18, 1915 in Gijón, a city in Asturias, Spain. He was the son of a socialist leader and a pianist mother. He became involved in politics at a young age and joined the Socialist Youth, where he became the general secretary in 1934. He worked as a journalist for the socialist newspaper El Socialista and adopted the pseudonym Santiago Martínez. He joined the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) in 1936 and became one of its leaders. He was elected to the Cortes (parliament) as a PCE deputy for Asturias in 1936. He was a prominent figure in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), supporting the Republican side against the fascist rebels led by Francisco Franco. He was appointed as the councillor of public order of the Madrid Defense Council and was responsible for organizing the defense of the capital. He also participated in the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898 that ended the Spanish-American War and ceded Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States. He went into exile in 1939, first in France and then in the Soviet Union. He became the secretary-general of the PCE in 1960 and led the party from abroad. He supported the anti-fascist movements in Europe and Latin America and denounced the crimes of Stalinism. He returned to Spain in 1977 after the death of Franco and the restoration of democracy. He was re-elected to the Cortes for Madrid in 1977 and 1979. He resigned from his post as secretary-general of the PCE in 1982 and became its honorary president. He advocated for Eurocommunism and democratic socialism, and supported a peaceful transition to a constitutional monarchy. He died on September 18, 2012 in Madrid at the age of 97
