Mario Camus

Mario Camus was a Spanish film director and screenwriter who was known for his adaptations of Spanish novels and his social realism. He started his career as an assistant director and co-writer for Carlos Saura in the 1960s, and then directed his own films, such as With the East Wind (1966), The Days of the Past (1978), The Hive (1982), The Holy Innocents (1984), and The House of Bernarda Alba (1987). He also worked for television, creating acclaimed series such as Fortunata and Jacinta (1980), La forja de un rebelde (1990), and La playa de los galgos (2002). He won several awards, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Goya Honorary Award. He was also a professor at the Official School of Cinematography in Madrid and a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He died in his hometown of Santander at the age of 86 after a long illness.
